Blog Questions

The Subject of Artificial Intelligence

What is Ken Feingold’s approach to artificial intelligence?
According to Feingold, it is a question of attaining and understanding “what is a human being? What is intelligence? What is thought? What is communication? What are the relationships between the technical aspects of thought, and what we think of as personality?”. He is interested in thinking about human behaviors, and is interested in the gaps that open when communication fails, when words have no meanings but only associative values, when memory has only a few moments duration, when we are “on automatic”.
What do Myron Krueger "videospace" and David Rokeby's "Very nervous system" have in common?
Both are interactive installations/pieces that operate by using the reality that surrounds the users, and by responding to their movements and actions.

What do you think about the interactive artworks presented in class this week?
I think that it is interesting and impressive that early on (in the 90’s), people where able to develop such kinds of technology, and brought us to tackle the matter of Artificial Technology; what it is and if it really exist.

Do they appeal to you or the opposite and why?
Although, in a research and technological perspective, I do find them interesting, in a personal perspective, they do not appeal to me, because I personally find them aesthetically disturbing and the way they spoke and responded gave me goosebumps.

What is the one laptop per child project?
The One Laptop per Child's mission is to empower the world's poorest children through education. They aim to provide each child with a rugged, low-cost, low-power, connected laptop. To this end, they have designed hardware, content and software for collaborative, joyful, and self-empowered learning. With access to this type of tool, children are engaged in their own education, and learn, share, and create together. They become connected to each other, to the world and to a brighter future.
